We've had lots of fun this week during National Library Week. We had crafts, a "Fancy Nancy" party and our regularly scheduled programs. On Thursday and Friday we were very lucky to have three children's authors and illustrators for our 9th annual "Children's Book Festival".
We had Jan Peck, author of "Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea", David Davis, author of "Jazz Cats" and Don Tate, illustrator of "Black All Around". They autographed books on Thursday at the new Dr, Clothilde Garcia library and then Friday we had approximately 1,200 children come to the Del Mar East campus with their teachers and parents to hear the special guests talk about children's books.
There is nothing like being outside on a very windy day with loads of four and five year old children and their caregivers. We all had fun listening and watching enthusiastic children. I got back to the library wind burned and happy with the results.
I'm slowly but surely getting ready for the 2009 summer reading program. It will begin a little later this year because of schools in the area getting out later. We will begin our "Libraries, Deep in the Heart of Texas" reading program on June 8. Keep your eyes out for our calendars and flyers beginning the middle of May. We will have many different activities for your child that will be free.
We will be getting our new mural in the children's area very soon. The painting is finished and on it's way to be put on wallpaper for our walls. It's a beautiful painting of the Pleistiocene era in the Coastal Bend. You are going to be very surprised what animals roamed around our area 13,000 years ago. I was really surprised to see how many animals we still have that were around that long ago. I wasn't surprised to see the cockroach, because you can't get rid of that insect, but I had no idea there were coyotes around in that era. Did you know we had Columbian Mammoths walking through our forests? How about the American Lion? Yes, I did say lion. I can't wait for the painting to be installed for you to check out.
If you haven't heard by now our Internet speed has increased tremendously. We've gotten much faster.
Don't forget our regular p.j. storytimes on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. and our family storytimes on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 11 a.m. We also have a baby-toddler storytime on Thursdays at 10:15 a.m.
