I can't believe it's time for summer reading again.

It's my 21st with the Corpus Christi Public Libraries. This year's theme is "Libraries: Deep in the Heart of Texas." Our opening program is Monday, June 8 at 4:30 p.m. Come by for cookies and punch and a story or two and register for summer reading.

Registration for the summer reading club is very easy. Your child will sign a pledge card that states they will read (or have read to them) 10 books or 500 pages. They will take home a reading log and bookmark. All you have to do is help them keep track of the books they read (or have read to them) and write down the title of the book on the reading log and then bring back the reading log to the library on one of your trips.

"Libraries: Deep in the Heart of Texas" is open to all children from ages infant to grade 12. It will run from June 8-July 18. When you bring back the reading log and show they've read 10 books your child will receive a reading certificate and some coupons. Their name will go up in the window in the children's room to celebrate reading the books. If they read more than 10 books (or 500 pages) a star will be added to their name tag for each set of 10 books (or 500 pages).

We will be having lots of fun free activities for your child, too. Beginning June 8 with our opening program, we will have lots of programs each week. Mondays will be "Deep in the Heart of Birds" at 2:15 p.m., where we will learn about birds. Mondays at 4:30 will be "Round-up crafts" where the children can make a craft to take home.

Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m. will be "Howdy Partner" visitors. We will have someone come talk to the children about different things, like the Padre National Seashore and a geologist talking about the Ice Age. Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. will be "Campout Tales" come hear your favorite campfire tales.

Wednesdays at 11 a.m. will be "Scooting Boogie Storytime" you and your child can listen and join in with stories, songs and silliness. This is geared towards preschoolers. On Wednesday afternoons at 4 p.m. will be our "Buggin outdoors nature activities". We will have crafts, adventures and visitors.

Thursdays, there will be three programs for you to choose from. At 10:15 a.m. will be our "Wee Little Roundup storytime" for babies and toddlers. This is a short 15 or 20 minute program geared for the very youngest child in your home. At 11 a.m. we will have "Texas Treasure Storytime" for preschoolers and young elementary ages. This will be a repeat of Wednesday's storytime. At 4:30 p.m. we will have "Beat the Texas Heat crafts. These crafts will be different from the Monday crafts.

Keep your calendars open for Saturday, July 25. We will be having our grand unveiling of the "Ice Age mural" and Mammoth bone display. Come help us celebrate a bit of Texas history. Keep your eyes open for the time.

Make sure and come by the library this summer for some fun, free activities for your bored child. Remember, reading is fun.
