The Coastal Bend College (CBC) phone system will no longer require the user to dial a 9 to reach an outside line when dialing 911. All CBC locations are in compliance with Kari’s Law (Senate Bill 788), which was signed by Governor Abbott on May 15, 2015.
Kari’s Law was established after the murder of Kari Hunt in Marshall, Texas. Hunts’ nine-year-old daughter tried to dial 911 for help four times on the motel room phone, but the calls never went through. The calls did not reach dispatchers because the child was unaware that you must dial a 9 before being able to dial 911.
When utilizing CBC’s phone system for outside calls, you will still be required to dial a 9 to reach an outside line. If for any reason you must report an emergency while utilizing CBC’s phone system, please dial 911 directly to reach the proper authorities.
