Tejano ROOTS will induct musicians at their 17th Annual Tejano ROOTS Hall of Fame Noche de Fiesta Tejana Saturday, Jan. 7.

"We have many bands performing," Tejano ROOTS President Ruben Lopez said. "This year the ceremony is honoring the late Javier Villanueva and the late Tony Morris."

Both were founders of Tejano ROOTS. Morris was a former publisher for Alice Echo-News Journal. The Noche de Gala is scheduled for Jan. 7 at VFW. The day before on Jan. 6, Tejano bands will be performing at the Jim Wells County fairgrounds, free to the public.

The event was started in 1999 to preserve the music of South Texas and honor the individuals who created it. Musicians of the past made it possible for current musicians to keep the Tejano tradition going, President Ruben Lopez said.

The awards will recognize broadcasters, bands, composers, promoters, sound engineers and others.

Emcee this year is Rudy Trevino, radio and TV personality and former inductee with band introductions by Joe Lozano.
