Car parts, a blanket, black skid marks and an apple were on the road as investigators attempted to reconstruct a two-vehicle accident that claimed the life of an Orange Grove woman and sent another woman to the hospital via Halo Flight Tuesday afternoon.

The women were traveling south in a Nissan Altima passenger vehicle on Highway 359 when the driver slowed down to turn onto County Road 3213, according to Trooper Sgt. Nathan Brandley with the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Another woman traveling south in a Volkswagen Jetta hit the Nissan from behind sending the Nissan forward, Brandley stated.

According to officials at the scene, a witness rushed to help the women by busting the airbag to get to the deceased woman, but it was too late.

Troopers identified the deceased as 69-year-old Maria Carbajal.

The driver of the Volkswagen was transported to Christus Spohn Alice Hospital where she was listed in stable condition.

Troopers are investigating the accident.

All the women were from Orange Grove.
