Freer - An 85-year-old Freer woman lost her life Tuesday on Highway 44 approximately five miles west of Freer when her vehicle collided with an 18-wheeler at approximately 3:30 p.m.
According to Department of Public Safety troopers, the woman, Maureen Harrington Grieder drove a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta traveling west on Highway 44 when she attempted to pass an 18-wheeler in front of her.
Grieder entered into the eastbound lane and collided with the 18-wheeler head-on.
Grieder was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Josie Fernandez.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was transported to the CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Alice with non-life threatening injuries, according to DPS.
DPS continues to investigate the accident.
