A warrant arrest on the 1800 block of Carmen Street in Rancho Alegre Wednesday night could have ended up deadly after deputies pulled up and noticed the suspect with a gun.
The gun turned out to be a BB-gun, officials said.
“We were able to react and handle the situation,” said Sgt. Ernie Rivera with the Jim Wells County Sheriff's Department. “It was a split-second decision.”
Deputies arrested 29-year-old Juan Michael Sanchez Jr. after searching the residence. Officers, assisted by Alice Police Department and Duval County Sheriff's Department, located drugs and a weapon in a bedroom.
The cocaine, packaged in plastic wrap, weighed 1.4 ounces and several bundled marijuana bags was 2.1 ounces, along with a 9-millimeter gun and scale. Sanchez was charged with manufacturing and delivery, possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of firearm by a felon.
“This is a social concern of the community that is affecting our kids,” said JWC Sheriff Daniel Bueno. “We will continue to monitor any information we receive,”
Jose Chavarria, who was attempting to leave the premises, was also arrested after deputies spotted marijuana inside his vehicle.
Both were transported to the Jim Wells County jail.
“These are lengthy investigations and we want the people to know that we don't just sweep them under a rug,” Rivera said. “We follow up.”
