With a new school year approaching the community is stepping up to help students can ready for the first day of school and a year of success.

The Jim Wells County Juvenile Probation Department – The probation department will host their big event of the year — the 11th annual Back-to-School Bash — on Saturday, Aug. 12 at the JWC Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Anyone willing to donate money, school supplies or be a vendor can call 361-668-5708 or go by the probation office located at 900 East First St. Basic school supplies will be given out to children in school. Last year, there were more than 30 vendors passing out school supplies to more than 1,000 children. Any remaining school supplies will be taken to other towns throughout the county.

Church of Hope (Calallen) – On Saturday, Aug. 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the church will have their back-to-school fair at 13024 Leopard St. Free backpacks, school supplies, haircuts, dental cleanings and more for children ages 5 through 17. For more information call 361-241-2472.

Primera Iglesia Bautista (San Diego) – Pastor Manuel Casso and members of Primera Iglesia Bautista invite the community to their back-to-school bash Saturday, Aug. 12 at 6 p.m. There will be games, songs, clowns, moon jumps and food, as well as free school supplies.

West Alice Youth Center - La Voz De Dios presents its fifth annual back to school fest on Saturday, Aug. 26. The church will hand out school supplies, food and there will be musical entertainment. The event starts at 5 p.m. at the youth center located at 1634 Rosario.
