CALALLEN - A new school year always brings plenty of excitement and maybe a little apprehension, but the staff at Wood River Elementary aimed to ease that nervousness with a Meet the Teacher night on Monday. Students were greeted by faculty and staff and were directed to their new classrooms, where they were able to talk to their new teachers and see their new classrooms.

“Caleb said he felt very scared at first, but when he met his teacher, he can’t wait to start learning! Mrs. Montgomery (first grade teacher) was very welcoming and greeted each and every one of us and wanted a hug from each student when they left. I thought that was very touching,” said Jessica Hackfield, whose son Caleb will be attending first grade at Wood River.

A kindergarten orientation was held in the school’s cafeteria and parents were told what to expect for the new school year. They were also introduced to the school’s administration and their children’s new teachers. Grades one through five reported directly to their classrooms, where they stashed their school supplies for the first day of school on Wednesday, Aug. 16.

The Wood River Parent Teacher Association was also on hand to sell memberships and spirit shirts, which are a uniform option for students.

Students also took the time to search out their former teachers and coaches to say hello.

“It is always so exciting on Meet the Teacher night,” said Dayla Hearon, kindergarten teacher. “I love meeting my new students, their parents and also seeing my past students. They always come back to check out the room and get a reassuring hug.”

All Calallen schools will begin Aug. 16 and the faculty and staff prepared for their students.
