A Dodd City man recently found out he will spend up to five years in prison for shooting his wife in the face back in May of 2016. Michael Piland’s wife, Shannon, survived the attack but was left with severe injuries.
Back in 2016, Fannin County District Attorney Richard Glaser said Shannon Piland lost an eye and part of her brain in the attack.
The range of punishment on the charge was five to 99 years in prison. Fannin County District Attorney Richard Glaser said Michael Piland’s attorney, Brian Bolton, told the jury his client got in an argument and accidentally shot his wife. The prosecution presented a ballistic expert who testified that the pistol in question required 12 pounds of pull to fire and wouldn’t have easily gone off on accident.
Glaser said his office accepts the jury’s decision, however, he said he was expecting a sentence of 15 to 20 years. Bolton could not be immediately reached for a comment on Friday.
