Sigifredo Cavazos, author of The Quest, will have a book signing at the San Diego library on Saturday, April 14.
The Quest is about a Vietnam veteran who explores his roots on a quest to find his true identity by going to Kingsville, Texas, home of the legendary King Ranch, to explore his father's Chicano roots as well as his own.
Cavazos dropped out of school in 10th grade from Harlingen High School, but said his love for literature was instilled by his grandmother.
He said his writing is constant.
"I'm writing right now," Cavazos said. "I'm writing in my mind."
He said in the military he had radar duties, which meant he was stranded in the boonies waiting for orders.
"That's when I started reading an old literature book and was I surprised I could understand not only the literature, but the genre and philosophy," Cavazos said.
By 1996, Cavazos was writing full time.
Cavazos served in the Air Force in 1949 and then went on to college.
He will be signing his books starting at 10:30 a.m.
