WOODSBORO - A 10-year-old boy from Rio Grande City, TX was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon after the vehicle he was riding in lost control.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Nathan Brandley, Jonathan Gonzalez-Pena was traveling north on US 77 approximately two miles north of Woodsboro in Refugio County in 1999 Ford F-350 with four other individuals.
DPS preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle's rear right wheel assembly came off causing the driver to lose control.
The vehicle crossed both northbound lanes, overturned into the center median and onto the southbound lanes. Two of the passengers, who were not wearing the seat belts were ejected from the vehicle.
Gonzalez-Pena was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Three passengers were transported via Halo-Flight to Spohn Shoreline in Corpus Christi. They are listed in critical but stable condition.
The driver was also transported to Spohn Shoreline by ground ambulance ins table condition.
The crash is still being investigated.
