A member of the Tuloso-Midway Independent School District Board of Trustees has resigned his position with one year remaining on his term.

Superintendent Cornelio Gonzalez said trustee Mike Alaniz resigned his position earlier this month because he had received a promotion at his place of employment, the Corpus Christi Police Department. As a result, Alaniz's new schedule would not allow him to serve in a suitable capacity as a school board member for the district and he decided to resign, Gonzalez said.

Seven applicants have expressed an interest in filling Alaniz's seat on the board, the superintendent said, with a replacement likely to be named at a Nov. 12 meeting by the remaining trustees. That meeting is tentatively scheduled to begin at 6:45 p.m. at the TMISD Administration Building, located at 9760 LaBranch Drive.

Alaniz's replacement would serve out the remainder of Alaniz's term, which was set to end in November 2010. At that point, voters will choose to either re-elect that individual or go with someone else for the seat.

Alaniz had served on the school board for the past five years, Gonzalez said.
