The Robstown High School Drafting Club competed Feb. 29 and March 1 in Laredo, at the District SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Contest.

There, they competed against schools from the entire South Texas area. Four Robstown High School clubs - Automotive, Building Trades, Drafting, and Graphic Arts - managed to win a portion of the contests.

All 22 members of the Drafting Club placed in some category. The club swept the Related Technical Math contest, with first place going to Carlos Correa, second place to Rudy Gonzalez and third to Omar Lopez. Correa and Gonzalez will advance to the State Skills and Leadership Contest, which will be held April 3-5 in Corpus Christi.

The Drafting Club also swept the State Pin Design contest with Rene Zavala placing first, Andrew Tobias second and Sam Pena third. Veronica Anguiano received an "Excellent" rating on her pin design and all four designs will advance to the state level.

The Web Page Design team of and Lionel Flores Jr. won first place and will advance to state, as will Mechanical Drafting Skills first-place winner Rudy Gonzalez and second-place winner Ashley Hernandez.

Quiz Bowl Team members Correa, Flores, Abigail Garcia, Stephen Garcia, Daniel Medrano and Leslie Vasquez won third place. The Promotional Bulletin Board team of Anguiano, Abigail Garcia, Stephen Garcia, Michael Hinojosa, Liza Silva and Vasquez won first place and will take their project to the state contest.

The Chapter Display team members Steven Charles, Ruben Elizondo, Gonzalez, Hernandez, Chelsea Koenig, Lopez, Jonathon Mares, Ray Vasquez and Zavala placed second and will also take their project to state contest.

Anguiano, Selina Arce, Brandon Gallegos, Hinojosa and Zavala all submitted designs for the Texas T-shirt Contest that advanced to the state level where they will draw their designs on site.

Flores, Ray Vasquez and Zavala submitted sets of architectural floor plans that received "Superior" ratings and will advance to state. Flores also submitted a Web page design project that will advance to state and he also won first place in the job skills demonstration.
