Abby Ray Loessin, a graduating senior from Agua Dulce High School, has been awarded a four-year, $5,000 Youth Livestock Scholarship sponsored by the State Fair of Texas.
The $1,250-per-year scholarship is renewable by maintaining a 3.0 grade point average.
Loessin participated in the State Fair of Texas Youth Livestock Show from 2003 to 2007. She showed in the youth beef heifer shows, youth market beef steer show and youth market barrow show and has won numerous places, including three first places.
In high school, she has been an active member of the Future Farmers of America, 4-H Club, National Honor Society, volleyball and pole-vaulting teams, as well as the Agua Dulce High School student council.
She has held numerous offices in the clubs and received many awards and honors during her high school career and was active in community service.
Since 1992, the State Fair of Texas Scholarship Program has awarded scholarships to academically talented students who graduated from high schools in the Dallas State Fair Park area.
In 1993, the scholarship program expanded its youth support by awarding scholarships to academically talented students who participated in the State Fair of Texas Youth Livestock Show. The 2008 Youth Livestock Show will be held this fall during the 122nd State Fair of Texas, from Sept. 26 to Oct. 19, at Fair Park in Dallas.
The State Fair of Texas will be awarding 167 scholarships for the 2008-09 school year. This includes 45 new and 67 renewed Youth Livestock scholarships and 28 new and 27 renewed Fair Park scholarships.
Loessin has plans to attend Texas A&M University - College Station and major in agriculture communications. She is the daughter of W.A. and Vickie Loessin of Robstown.
The Agua Dulce teen was also the winner of this year's Nueces County Record Star essay contest, which awarded her $500 for college.
