Two Calallen Middle School students have been honored for achievements in academics and community service.

The Whataburger Winner's Circle program acknowledges students for contributions to their schools, their families and their communities in addition to academic achievements and school involvement.

All Whataburger Winner's Circle nominees will be recognized during participating university basketball and baseball games throughout the spring.

Calallen Middle School students Amely Cardenas and Steve Warren were honored, along with 26 other students from around the Coastal Bend, in February at a Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Islanders basketball game.

Middle school teachers from the Coastal Bend nominated students from their schools based on positive behaviors and actions such as attending class on time, improving academically, being a good citizen, completing homework, being respectful in class and demonstrating leadership qualities.

The winners and their families were then invited to attend a men's basketball or baseball game at the university in their area, given complimentary Whataburgers, and recognized at the game. Each student also received a Winner's Circle certificate and T-shirt for their well-deserved recognition.

"These students routinely prove that they go above and beyond their hard work in the classroom with their volunteer efforts and participation in extra curricular activities," Preston Atkinson, president and COO of Whataburger Restaurants, said. "It's important to recognize the many ways these children contribute to their families, schools and communities. We're honored to encourage them to keep up the good work."
