East Elementary and Wood River Elementary schools were once again named to the Texas Business and Education Coalition Honor Roll.

The schools were two of only four campuses placed from the Region 2 Education Service Center area to receive the honor. Of the 8,000 plus public schools in Texas, less than 4 percent of the schools qualify for the list.

This is East Elementary’s fifth consecutive year to be recognized with a spot on the TBEC Honor Roll, while it is Wood River Elementary’s third consecutive year.

‘This is just an amazing, committed, dedicated staff. They work really hard with our kids and our parents are very involved,” East Elementary Principal Margaret Johnson said. “This staff is really an awesome team.”

The TBEC Honor Roll rewards sustained academic excellence in the State of Texas.

It recognizes schools that have demonstrated three years of consistent, high performance in all subjects compared to other schools serving similar student populations.

TBEC Honor Roll schools have the highest percentage of students performing at the state’s most rigorous standard -— ommended — in every subject, according TBEC officials.

“This year we are transitioning to STAAR assessment and are working hard to adjust. We will do whatever it takes to get our kids where they need to be,” Johnson said.

Calallen ISD Superintendent Arturo Almendarez said he was extremely proud of both elementary schools, acnd credited both the teachers and community for their roles.

“It speaks volumes about the dedicated teachers, administrators and students at both campuses. We are very grateful for the support that we receive from our PTAs and our parents also,” Almendarez said.

The schools will be honored at the 12th Annual TBEC Honor Roll School seminar, reception and dinner, which will be held in Dallas on Dec. 2.
