Recently, Falfurrias High School track and field running legends Roberto Gonzalez, Homer Martinez and Robstown's Noe De Leon attended the Hispanic Hall of Fame Banquet.
Martinez was inducted into the Hispanic Hall of Fame on Aug. 8 at the Omni Hotel in San Antonio. Gonzalez and De Leon were the special guests of Martinez.
Gonzalez was Martinez's teammate at Falfurrias and Texas A&I University in Kingsville. De Leon is the only student-athlete that Martinez coached who has competed in the U.S.A. World Cross Country Championship Trials and ran professionally for Nike.
All three distance runners graduated from Texas A&I, which is now Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
These three Javelinas set Lone Star Conference records and were conference champions, a rare feat. The trio still hold university school records some 30 years later that range from 800-meter to the marathon (26.2 miles).
De Leon now works for the Robstown Independent School District. He is the In-School Suspension teacher at Seale Jr. High School.
