Judy Blackwell hosted a Bluebonnet Breakfast in the Hattie Martin Elementary School Library on March 24 for the 24 fourth graders who participated in the Texas Bluebonnet Award reading program this year.

The students read from a set of 20 books written by Texas authors selected by the Texas Library Association committee and then took part in online voting for the favorite book they read. Students in 1,842 schools across the state of Texas took part in reading and voting. There were 191,161 students who voted for the books.

The winner, "Help Me, Mr. Mutt," (31,933 votes) by J. Stevens/S. Crummel won first place, and "Martina the Beautiful Cockroach," (19,379 votes) by Carmen Agra Deedy came in second across the state.

The winner will be honored at the annual Texas Library Association Conference Bluebonnet Luncheon in San Antonio later this month. Hattie Martin students were treated to an invitation-only Bluebonnet breakfast in March for their efforts. The menu included blueberry pancakes, blueberry muffins and blueberry cereal.
