The Nueces County Keach Family Library, in conjunction with the National Latino Children's Institute will be celebrating children, teens, and literacy with its "Dia de Los Ninos" event on May 2, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event will be held at the Richard M. Borchard Fairgrounds Central Pavilion Arena.

Children's days are traditionally observed in Latin America and other countries around the world to celebrate the child's value within the family and the community. More than 100 cities across the country will celebrate the holiday this year.

"The National Latino Children's Institute has petitioned the U.S. Senate since 1999 to designate April 30, as Dia de los Ninos," Josephine Garza, NCLI executive director, said. "Since its inception, this day has been a gift from the Latino community to all children and is set aside so that we may recognize and honor our youth while celebrating our cultural heritage and diverse backgrounds."

This year, the library will host a petting zoo, pony rides, Diabetes Awareness program, a book and book bag giveaway, music, and much more.

Organizations and individuals wanting to be involved with this event should contact the Nueces County Keach Family Library at (361) 387-3431 and visit www.nlci.org.
