The Nueces County Tax Assessor-Collector is reminding residents to pay their tax bill on time to avoid paying interest and penalties.
About 148,000 tax notices were sent to property owners in the county in October. Taxpayers have until Jan. 31 to pay their bill, Tax Assessor-Collector Ronnie Canales said.
Penalties will begin accruing at the end of January if property taxes are not paid on time. Those include a 7 percent penalty, which is 7 percent of the taxable value of the property, added onto the resident's outstanding tax bill, Tax Assessor-Collector officials said.
The penalties will increase every month until the bill is paid, with a potential of up to 34 percent of a home's taxable value added onto any outstanding tax bills.
If a property owner has not received his or her tax notice, then he or she must call the Tax Assessor-Collector office at 888-0230. The office is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
