On May 30 Banquete High School trumpet player, Jon Thomas Skoruppa, attended the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Competition in San Marcos.
Skoruppa's performance consisted of the musical selection by composer Alexander Goedecki entitled "Concert Etude Op. 49," which was performed by memory. Skoruppa's efforts and performance awarded him recognition by the state director of music, Richard Floyd.
"Of approximately 85,000 students participating in the regional University Interscholastic League music contest and 22,000 musicians who performed at TSSEC, only 239 students earned the distinguished honor of being recognized as an outstanding performer," Floyd said. "This achievement is truly a mark of musical excellence."
In addition to being recognized, Skoruppa's picture will be included in the UIL Book of Champions that honors Texas high school student who reach the highest level of achievement in UIL competition.
"Awards of this nature do not come easily and reflect the efforts of many individuals." Floyd said.
Jon Thomas is under the direction of band director Arnaldo Menchaca Jr. and will be a junior in the coming 2009-10 school year. His parents are Tom and Mary Kay Skoruppa.
