Robstown police arrested a 29-year-old man last week after officers found nearly eight ounces of heroin hidden in a safe in the suspect's home.

Narcotics Officer Derley Flores said police received information via the department's hotline that led to a six-month investigation on Rene Rivera. Robstown police, along with officers from the Alice Police Department and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, executed a search and arrest warrant on April 26 at Rivera's home in the 3000 block of Meadow Lane.

Once inside the home, Rivera cooperated with police and showed them to a safe in his bedroom that contained about eight ounces of black tar heroin, along with a .380-caliber handgun and some cash, Flores said. The heroin had an estimated street value of $54,000, he added.

A second safe was found on the other side of the home and contained a large amount of cash and coin rolls. In all, officers seized $16,098 from the home, along with three vehicles and assorted drug paraphernalia.

Rivera was taken into federal custody and is being charged with possession of a controlled substance, a first degree felony.

Robstown Police Chief Johnny Brown said the bust was a major blow to the drug trade in the city, adding it was only the beginning of things to come.

"If you're selling drugs in Robstown, stop. It's as simple as that," Brown said. "We're coming after you, so quit now."

"Stop selling or leave town," Flores added.
