The Corpus Christi Metropolitan Statistical Area saw an increase in its unemployment rate during the month of January, according to recent figures released by the Texas Workforce Commission.
The Corpus Christi MSA, which is comprised of Aransas, San Patricio and Nueces counties, had an 8.7 percent unemployment rate for the month of January. That is a .5 percent increase from December's unemployment rate of 8.2 percent.
The total number of unemployed workers for January stood at 18,535, a near six percent increase from the month of December. January's unemployment rate for the Corpus Christi MSA is also slightly higher than the State of Texas' rate, which stands at 8.5 percent.
The area's labor force took a hit in January, with 2,178 employees lost from December's total of 196,711.
Despite the drop-off in jobs, January's employment figures were slightly better than at the same time last year. The number of people employed is higher than January 2010, with 194,533 workers compared to 192,959 in January 2010.
