The Calallen Independent School District announced last week that it was the recipient of a grant totaling $46,320 from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality's Clean School Bus Program.
The program has a total of about $8 million available on a first-come, first-served basis for fiscal year 2009. The application deadline is Dec. 15.
"A relatively small investment in a retrofit can reduce emissions by 70 to 80 percent" Commissioner Larry R. Soward said. "By installing these devices, we help protect the health of Texas school children."
The Texas Education Agency reports that more than 33 percent of school buses in local fleets are more than 10 years old.
