The Bishop Chamber of Commerce is holding its 14th annual spring festival called "Bishop's Olde Tyme Faire" on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at Bishop City Park, at the corner of Business 77 and Joyce Street.
Kicking off the day's events, starting at 9 a.m., will be a 5K Fun Run/2Mile Walk along a scenic path around Lake LaCour and along Birch Avenue.
At 10 a.m. Little League and T-Ball games will begin, continuing all day. All booths and entertainment will begin at 10 a.m.
Featured live entertainment at the covered pavilion will include several bands, featuring Contemporary, Latin, Christian, Progressive Rock, Mexican Conjunto, and Country/Western music. Special features include a performance by the Ballet Folklorico from Lady of Good Counsel Church of Kingsville, the Bishop Cheerleaders, and Jonathan Morales (Christian songs).
Booth or space rentals are available for food and arts and crafts. A 10-foot by 10-foot space rents for $20, add $5 for electricity. Concession stand space is $30. A 10-foot by 10-foot space inside the Bishop Community Center rents for $35 (arts and crafts only). All food handlers are to follow the requirements of the Bishop City Health Department.
Children's activities include a dunking booth, face-painting, fishing pond, soda ring toss, "Ring the Duck", moonwalk, "balloon bust", cork guns, rides and much more.
The popular "Cow Plop" contest is back again, and consists of 2-foot squares on a grid where a cow will be turned loose at 3 p.m. The owner of the square that receives the first "plop" will win $500. Eight adjoining squares will receive $100 each. Tickets are $5 per square, or 5 squares for $20. Tickets for "Cow Plop" are available at Texas State Bank in Bishop and at the chamber office, 213 E. Main.
New this year will be the Ag Booster's Club event, called "Kiss the Pig." Several prominent citizens will be feathered in a contest to see who will kiss the pig by accumulating votes. The person with the most votes will actually kiss the pig at 4 p.m. during the festivities at the covered pavilion.
Christus Spohn Wellness Center and the Celanese Bishop Plant are collaborating on a health fair, which will offer free screenings for weight, blood pressure and glucose. Health counseling and information will be provided. This will be located in the Bishop Community Center at City Park from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
A Silent Auction will also be held inside the Community Center. Winners will be announced at the center between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.
