Family members of the late Ruben Chavez honored the memory of the first soldier from Robstown to be killed in Vietnam with a mass at a local church.
Chavez, who would have been nearing his 70th birthday next year, was honored with a mass held Wednesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Robstown. The city renamed Airport Road in Chavez's honor shortly after his death at the age of 23. He was killed in 1965 during a search and destroy mission.
His sister, Elodia, asked members of the public to remember her brother, and soldiers like him, every day by honoring the sacrifices they have made in the name of freedom.
"He was a good brother," she said. "That's why whenever I get the chance to honor him, I do it."
