Nicholas Nelson, a 2000 graduate of Calallen High School, was recently promoted to the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army. Nelson is in the 1-321st Airborne Field Artillery Regiment stationed at Ft. Bragg in North Carolina.

Nicholas is the son of Chris and Nancy Nelson, formerly of Calallen.

Navy Seaman Recruit Brannon J. Swallow, son of Devrone R. and Marc L. Swallow of Corpus Christi, Texas, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Swallow completed a variety of training that included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations."

This exercise is designed to give recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet.

"Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment.

Its distinctly ”Navy” flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor.

Swallow is a 2008 graduate of Calallen High School.

Navy Reserve Seaman Apprentice Matthew J. Villarreal, son of Janie M. Villarreal of Bishop, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training and was meritoriously promoted to his current rank at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.
