Robstown Independent School District Trustee Robert Tapia on Friday announced his intention to run for the office of Robstown mayor.

Tapia, a lifelong resident of Robstown, said he decided to run after giving the idea much thought.

"Nothing seems to be getting done as far as bringing in new business (to Robstown)," he said. "We keep focusing on China and it hasn't gotten us anywhere."

Tapia has served on the RISD Board of Trustees since 2007.

As of Friday, two other candidates - local businessman Joe Avalos and Robstown resident Ruben Vaiz - have filed to run against incumbent Mayor Rodrigo Ramon Jr., who is seeking re-election.

Four Robstown City Council members - Sybil Tipton, Arlene Rodriguez, Amanda Vasquez and David Medina - remained unopposed as of Friday. Councilman Abel Tamez is being challenged by Herlinda Escareno, while Elias Vasquez will be facing Noe De Los Santos in the May 14 election.

The deadline to file for a place on the May 14 ballot is 5 p.m. on Monday.
