Four people were killed in a head-on collision just east of Robstown on State Highway 44 about 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Three of the individuals who died are from Alice and one is from Robstown. The Alice residents have been identified as Veronica Garcia, 23; Iris Jones, 19; and Jeffery Garcia, 18.

Raul Castillo, 23, of Robstown was also killed in the accident. Eliza De Los Santos, 23, of Robstown, was transported to CHRISTUS Spohn Memorial Hospital in serious condition, Robstown Police Chief Johnny Brown said Saturday.

The Alice residents were traveling eastbound in a white, four-door Volkswagon Jetta on Highway 44 just east of Robstown shortly before 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Brown said.

For an unknown reason, the Jetta swerved left into oncoming traffic and struck a westbound gray, two-door BMW containing Castillo and De Los Santos.

The BMW spun into a third vehicle, but no one in that vehicle was injured in the crash, Brown said.

On Monday, the cause of the crash remained under investigation. Several cans of beer were found in the Jetta, investigators with the Robstown Police Department confirmed, but alcohol has not been determined to be a factor in the wreck.

Preliminary autopsies were performed Monday morning by the Corpus Christi Medical Examiner, but the results of those autopsies have not been released.

De Los Santos remained in serious condition at CHRISTUS Spohn Memorial Hospital Monday. Investigators said she is still under sedation, and is being treated for spinal injuries and internal bleeding.
