DRISCOLL - One man was killed and a couple was seriously injured in a fiery two-vehicle crash Monday afternoon along U.S. Highway 77 near Driscoll.

Truck driver Jose Luis Leal Jr., 38, of Weslaco, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at 1:45 p.m. by Nueces County medical examiner Kim Ogden, police said.

Police said the driver of a motor home, Donald Barnard Tolner, 51, of Austin, Minn., and his passenger, Laura Beth Tolner, 57, also of Austin, both suffered incapacitating and serious injuries and were taken to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital for treatment.

They were both listed in intensive care at the hospital Tuesday morning and their injuries could have been worse if they had not been rescued from their burning recreational vehicle.

Leal was not rescued in time, police said.

Police said the accident occurred at about 1:40 p.m., about one mile north of Driscoll, as Donald Tolner was driving north on Highway 77, pulling a utility trailer with his motor home.

A strong gust of wind caused his R.V. to veer off the roadway and into the median, police said.

Police said Tolner attempted to regain control, but was unsuccessful as his R.V. went across the median and into the southbound lanes of 77 where it struck Leal's tractor-trailer, nearly head-on, in the middle of the southbound lanes.

The impact caused both vehicles to burst into flames as both vehicles came to rest in the median, police said.

Police said the conditions at the time of the accident were dry with high winds.

All three accident victims were reportedly wearing seatbelts.
