CORPUS CHRISTI - Candelaria Alaniz Chapa passed away on Saturday, September 15, 2017. She was born on February 2, 1918 in Salineno, Texas to the late Felipe and Constancia Alaniz, and at the age of 9 months, by covered wagon as she told it, she accompanied her parents and her older sister Mary to their new home in Robstown, Texas.
As a child, living one block from St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, she had fond memories of her mentor Sister Margarita, to whom she was a constant shadow. During that time, Cande was not only close to the church, but was always participating in the school’s dramatic and comedic plays. She would often give long memorized recitations of poetry and sometimes even sing solo on stage. She had a lovely voice and loved music throughout her life. Cande, our mother, will always be remembered by family and friends for her quick wit and especially her sense of humor. Her smart and hilarious comments about almost everything being discussed made everyone laugh and enjoy and love her all the more. She will be dearly missed.
Cande is preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband, Dan Chapa; her sister, Mary Gomez; her brother, Balo Alaniz, and several brothers and sisters in law.
She is survived by her two sons and three daughters, Irma (Felix) Ocanas, Dan (Linda) Chapa, III, Armando (Vangie) Chapa, Vilma (Eduardo) Zuniga, and Madge (Walter) Reyna; Nothing would bring a smile faster to her face than the discussion of or time with her twelve grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Margie Alaniz, Gloria Carrizales, Lucila Carbajal, Angie Chapa, Lamar Chapa and brother-in-law, Filiberto Chapa, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 from 5 to 9 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. that same evening at Ramon Funeral Home Chapel in Robstown, Texas. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Robstown, Texas. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Robstown, Texas.
