Marie Elizabeth McCown died Sept. 4, 2008.

She was of pioneer stock. She was born Aug. 15, 1918 to Hugh and Elizabeth Mahoney McCown in San Benito. She was a math teacher and coach, known by her students as Ms. Mac. She taught for 45 years, most of that spent in Calallen and Pettus. Her students won many competitions in slide rule. She was also an agent for Catholic Life Insurance, and spent her summers working at the Edroy cotton gin.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, J.H., Harold, Orville, Irene, Inez and Paul; her nieces and nephews, Joe and Mary Ann McCown, Bruce Hattenbach and Virginia Temple.

She is survived by her sister, Charlotte Byerly; nieces and nephews, Bettye McCown, Mike McCown, Kate Loeffler, Harold McCown, James McCown, Pamela Forshage, Linda Singleton, David McCown, Patricia Kelso, Cindy McCown, Mark McCown, Guy Hattenbach, Mary Ordner, Robert Hattenbach, Daniel Byerly, Mary Davis, James Byerly, Paul McCown Jr., Eddy McCown, Elizabeth Kruse, Earl McCown Sr., Christine Feuge and Christopher McCown; and numerous great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

A Rosary was held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in San Patricio. Funeral Mass was on Monday, Sept. 8, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick. Interment followed in St. Patrick Cemetery in San Patricio.
