Eliza Garcia Hanson, 90, died Friday, July 25, 2008.

She was born on Dec. 2, 1917 in Macdona to Rafael and Mariana Garcia.

Eliza was married to Fred Hanson for 48 years. In 1941, Eliza and Fred opened "Eliza's Beauty Salon" on Avenue A and in 1958 relocated to Lincoln Avenue in Robstown. She was a pilar of the community as well as a savvy businesswoman with grit and tenacity that kept her working until the age of 90.

She was a member of TOPS Club, the National Beauty Association, and Senior Friends. As a two-time cancer survivor, she also participated in the Relay for Life several years. There were seven siblings including Eliza as they grew up in a rural community west of San Antonio. They spent time picking tomatoes and pecans as a family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, two brothers, Joe Garcia and Ralph M. Garcia; and three sisters, Adela Guerrero, Georgina Greer and Elvira Garcia.

Survivors include her brother, Robert (Dolores) Garcia of San Antonio, her niece, Diane Garcia of Robstown; and many nieces, nephews and their children and other relatives and friends.

A Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 27, in the Ramon Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, July 28, at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Interment followed at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Freddy Garcia, Tommy Cummins, Jerry Greer, Alex Obvinster, Tim Bearden, Gilbert Guerrero and Rafael Guerrero.
