Maudie Belle Chighizola, 93, passed away, encircled by family members in San Antonio on April 22, 2010. Maudie Belle was born to Emmanuel Grover and Mary Maude Goodwin July 10, 1916 in Mathis. She was the youngest daughter of seven children: Lucille, Delmo, Louise, Mabel, Ruth and Ed, and lived in Robstown for 59 years.
Her paternal grandfather, James Monroe Grover, fought in a number of early Texas battles and was associated with the McMullen-McGloin Irish colony that settled in St. Patricio County. Her paternal grandmother was Catherine O'Houlihan from Tralee, Ireland, who joined the McMullen-McGloin Irish colony. Maude Belle was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
Maude Belle married Aubrey Lee Maloy in 1933 and members of St. John Nepomucene Church in Robstown. They had five children: Larry Lee, Michael Aubrey, Joyce Ann, Patrick James, and Sharon. Aubrey and Maudie Belle owned and operated the A. L. Maloy Lumber Co. in Robstown. In 1970, Aubrey passed away.
Maudie met and married Joseph Chighizola in 1974. She actively worked with Capt. Chighizola in his business, Maritime Enterprises, an international marine equipment business. The couple lived in Aransas Pass. They later retired and moved to Portland, where they were members of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, and the Senior Citizens Center of Portland. Capt. Chighizola passed away in 1993.
She loved to root cuttings of fancy roses for her rose garden, she loved to dance, and she was a life-long member of the Democratic Party.
Her son Larry Maloy precedes her in death, but Maudie Belle is survived by her son, Michael Aubrey and wife, Patricia Smith Maloy, of Houston; daughter-in-law, Marie Malek Maloy of Corpus Christi; daughter, Joyce Maloy Studer and husband Roger Studer of Fredericksburg; son, Patrick James Maloy of Dallas, and Sharon Maloy Richards and husband, Terry Richards of Buda; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday, May 1, 2010, beginning with Rosary at 9:30 a.m. and Mass at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Portland. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Robstown.
