Jerry Tomsu, 77, of Calallen passed away Oct. 22, 2009.
He was born April 19, 1932 to Frank and Agnes Kajs Tomsu in Oklaunion. He graduated from Lyford High School in 1949, the University of Texas at Austin in 1953 and received his Master's Degree in Education from the University of Texas in 1955. He coached at Cherokee High School, Manor High School, Los Fresnos High School, Mission High School and Robstown High School for a total of 30 years. During that time he was most successful at Los Fresnos High School where he was selected as the Rio Grande Valley Football Coach of the Year in both 1967 and 1971.
He is survived by his wife, Betty of Calallen; a step-son, Johnny Hoyd of Mt. Vernon, Ind.; a sister, Genevieve Friesenhahn of Taylor; nieces, Theresa Veilleux of Homdel, N.J., and Dianne Friesenhahn of Hutto.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. Michael Howell as celebrant.
