Kathryn Pearl Thornton, 89, of Highland Village, passed away Oct. 30, 2010.

In 1956, the family relocated from Corpus Christi to Abilene where they raised their children. Kathryn began working for Sears and retired in 1987.

Kathryn was an active member of Highland Church of Christ in Abilene, as well as Women for Christian Homes for approximately 30 years. Kathryn became an Officer of Abilene Experimental Aircraft Association after building an airplane with her husband in the late 1950s. They enjoyed traveling in both their airplane and, in their golden years, in their motor home across country.

Kathryn always enjoyed painting with oils, quilting, and playing music with friends and family. In 1995, Kathryn returned to Corpus Christi where she became a member of Arlington Heights Church of Christ. The church was an important part of her life and she enjoyed many years of Christian fellowship.

She was married for more than 60 years to Thurston A. Thornton who preceded her in death in 1997. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Otto Melvin Johnson and Varah Molly Brooks Johnson; her brothers, Melvin, Johnny, A.C. and Brooks Johnson; and her sisters, Antha Hahn and Nell Blissitt.

Kathryn and Thurston had three children, Mary Kathryn Howard of Highland Village, Thurston Ashley Thornton Jr. of Abilene, and Michael Rae Thornton of Cadiz, Ken.. She is survived by her three children, eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Henry Johnson of Conroe; her sisters, Myrtle Rice and Decie Asensio of Corpus Christi, and Jeannette Hallmark of Kenedy; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010 at Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Memory Gardens.
