Richard De Los Santos Barrera died on Sunday, July 6, 2008, after a short illness.
He was born in Robstown on Oct. 6, 1947. He was a graduate of St. John Catholic School and joined the U.S. Navy immediately after. He served four years as a Marine medic in Vietnam. He resided in Banquete for 28 years with his family. He was an employee of the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years, and retired in 2004. He enjoyed a variety of activities, such as participating in the Robstown Little League as a board member and a coach, Banquete 4-H organization as a leader, and active membership in the Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Veterans Association. In his spare time, he loved to weld, barbeque, and play a variety of online games. He was a recreational hunter and and greatly enjoyed a nice cup of coffee while talking with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Lucirio and Josepha Barrera; and parents, Jose L. and Santos De Los Santos Barrera.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Rebecca Barrera; four children, Isabel Barrera (Rodrigo Gonzalez Jr.) of Alice; Carisa Chapa (Lupe Jr.) of Banquete, Lucirio A. Barrera (Janet Zavala) of Corpus Christi, and Ricardo D. Barrera Jr. (Samantha Bisch) of Banquete; three grandchildren, Alexandrea, Alyana and Pantaleon Chapa; three siblings, Irma Sanchez of Victoria, Abel Barrera of Victoria, and Belinda De La Rosa of Victoria; other survivors include various nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Ramon Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 9, from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m. and on Thursday, July 10, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 11, at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Pallbearers were Abel Barrera Jr., Joey Sanchez, Jonathan De La Rosa, Michael De La Rosa, Mario H. Lopez Jr., Michael A. Lopez, Cruz Zepeda, Brian Schiller and Jesse Urrera.
