Elena Longoria Saenz passed away Sept. 10, 2011 after a long illness.
She was born in Valley Wells, Texas on Oct. 19, 1915, and spent most of her adult life residing in Robstown. Since Elena was a young girl, she worked in crop fields that ranged from sugar beets in Michigan to cotton in South Texas. She married her husband, Tomas Saenz, in 1938 and gave birth to six sons and one daughter.
Raised by her uncle Juan Duron, Elena was preceded in death by her mother, Isabel Longoria, who died in childbirth, and her father, Antonio Longoria. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Rodolfo (Paula) Saenz and Tomas (Bebe) Saenz Jr.; sisters, Isabel Alvarez of Hondo, Josefa Barrera of Robstown; and brother, Antonio Longoria Duron of Chicago.
Elena is survived by her sons, Fidel (Maria) Saenz of Robstown, Pedro (Purification) Saenz of Virginia, Ruben (Matilda) Saenz of Dallas, and Rodrigo (Balde) Saenz of San Antonio; daughter, Mary Elena (Senovio Jr.) Martinez of Robstown; numerous grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.
She was a lifelong member of the American G.I. Forum and served on various committees, the March of Dimes and other civic organizations. In October 2010, on her 95th birthday, she was honored by the Texas State House of Representatives and former State Representative Abel Herrero with a House Resolution, citing her many contributions to the welfare and well-being of her community.
The Rosary was recited Sept. 12 at the Ramon Funeral Home Chapel. A Mass was held Sept. 13, 2011 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Robstown. Interment follwed at Memorial Park Cemetery in Robstown.
Pallbearers were David Alexander Saenz, Anthony Martinez, Senovio Martinez III, Oscar Xavier Martinez, Rodrigo Saenz Jr. and Joshua Saenz Rivera.
