Lura Belle Bonds McCain, 88, died on March 24, 2009.
Lura Belle, nicknamed "Lue" by her first grandson, Charles Wayne "Chuck" Myers, was born June 13, 1920, in Coon Creek, a small community near Whitney. Her parents were Dube Bonds and Mattie Hicks Bonds.
She lived on a small farm in Coon Creek and attended school in a two-room schoolhouse until she had to leave home to get a high school diploma at a larger school, where she played six player girls basketball. She left Coon Creek and moved to Corpus Christi in 1940, and met Charles Thomas "Tom" McCain, deceased, of Eddy. They met at a dance at Moravian Hall in Corpus Christi.
Lue is survived by her daughter, Tommie Kay Cox of Columbia, S.C.; her son, Charles Anthony "Tony" McCain and his girlfriend Elaine Hyland of Newark, Del., and her son, Carlton Bonds McCain and his wife LeAnn Risken McCain of Corpus Christi; six grandchildren, Charles Wayne "Chuck" Myers, Kimberly Kay Shrader, Cameron Anthony McCain, Celeste Anne (Steve) Rossetti, Cory Risken McCain, Kelly Charles McCain and fianc/ Christina Fenner; five great-grandchildren, Rowan Myers, Dylan Myers, Summer Shrader, Savannah Shrader and Luke Shrader; and a number of family and friends.
Lue was a homemaker and a fabulous cook. Her specialties were chocolate chip cookies and peach pie.
Cooking and cleaning for her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren made her happy. Besides homemaking, she and husband Tom enjoyed taking their children to baseball games, football games and track meets all over the state of Texas.
She was especially proud of her baseball hitting accomplishment when she batted 1.000 in a Mom's charity baseball game following her son's 1958 baseball season.
She retired from baseball after that game.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 27, 2009 in the Sawyer George Funeral Home Chapel.
A graveside ceremony was held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the Coon Creek Cemetery.
