Evelyn Urbis, 79, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2011.

Evelyn was born in Waco on Sept. 7, 1931.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe F. Urbis; and parents, Anton and Jeannie Mazanec. She attended Baylor University and Texas Women University before taking a hiatus to become a housewife. She later received a Bachelor’s Degree at age 37 from Texas A&I University in Kingsville.

Evelyn taught elementary school for 24 years in the Calallen Independent School District at Magee Elementary and Wood River Elementary.

Evelyn was the valedictorian of her senior class at La Vega High School in Bellmead. She was an athlete, expert markswoman, chef, pianist, Czech speaker and a Catholic.

She was a member of parishes of St. Joseph’s (Bellmead), Our Lady of the Assumption (West), St. John Nepomucene (Robstown), and Christ the Redeemer (Cypress).

Evelyn was also a member of St. Anne’s Altar Society, Catholic Daughters and the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity.

She is survived by a daughter, Joan (Dennis) Teel of Cypress; two sons, Richard (Suezanne) Urbis of Brownsville and David (Kathi) Urbis of Corpus Christi; grandchildren, Karleen (Kyle) Pape of The Woodlands, Joe A. (Katie) Urbis of San Antonio, Julie Urbis, Lorraine Urbis, Margaret Urbis and Sarah Teel; great-grandchildren, Cameron, Carson and Reagan Claire Pape; sisters-in-law, Rosalie Urbis and Josephine Urbis; nephews, Mark, Michael and Pat Urbis; along with numerous other relatives and friends.

The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church in Cypress.

Graveside and burial services took place on Thursday, July 21, at St. Mary’s Cemetery in West.
