Orville Wayne Sawyer, 76, of Alice, died Tuesday, May 20, 2008, after a long illness.

He was born in Agua Dulce, and attended and graduated high school in George West. After serving his country in the U.S. Air Force, he attended and graduated from Texas A&I College in Kingsville. Wayne was employed by only two companies in his lifetime, Alamo Iron Works and B. G. Cornelius Construction Co.. He will be remembered most for his love of golf and felt fortunate to get to enjoy playing for a few years after retirement. He also loved to dance and was able to spend quite a few years attending dances with Pat. He was a huge fan of the Texas Longhorns and the Houston Astros and attended those games whenever he could. Before he got too ill to drive, he looked forward to having coffee at the Dairy Burger on 281 each and every morning. Wayne was a member and former Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Alice and past member of both the Brownsville and Alice Rotary Clubs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira Lee and Katherine McCain Sawyer, and two sisters, Wilma Dean and Jane Katherine Sawyer.

He is survived by his wife, Pat; his three children, Lee Anne Ghilain (Danny) of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Sheri Lynn Hoelscher (Sonny) of Alice, and Michael W. Sawyer of Corpus Christi; eight grandchildren, Risa Ann Jones (Josh) of Rockport, Jenna Lee Ghilain of Austin, Briana Danielle Ghilain of South Padre Island, Dannie Lynn Ghilain of Hawaii, Trey Sill of Dallas, Chelsi Lee DeLaune of Austin, Tyler Wayne DeLaune of Alice, and Kaci Nicole Sawyer of Corpus Christi; two great-grandchildren, Jabin and Audra Jones of Rockport; two brothers, Tommie Lee Sawyer (Teresa Lynn) of Fort Worth, and Jack Charles Sawyer (Brenda) of Corpus Christi; three nieces, Kelley Sawyer, Vicki June Cagle (Kent) and Renita Gale Massey; one nephew, Wade Sawyer; and numerous cousins.

Memorial services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, May 23, at First Presbyterian Church of Alice with the Rev. Larry McRorey of First United Methodist Church of Alice and the Rev. Wendy Nave of First Presbyterian Church of Alice officiating. Burial was in the Alice Cemetery in Alice. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, 2910 Leopard St., Corpus Christi, Texas 78408.
