John E. "Corkey" Thompson Jr., 75, of Fredericksburg died Thursday, March 13, 2008, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 6, 1932, in Corpus Christi to John Ernest Thompson Sr. and Gaynell Coleman Thompson.
On April 2, 1985 he married Shirlee Rivers in Universal City.
Thompson was retired from farming in Robstown. He and his wife, Shirlee, moved to Fredericksburg in 1985. He was a U. S. Army veteran. He served on his hometown's Robstown City Council for nine years, and seven of those nine as the mayor pro tem of Robstown, street commissioner and two terms as president of the Petronlia Grain Co-Op, Robstown where he remained a member. He also served four years as county commissioner for Gillespie County and he was a member of The St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg.
Thompson is survived by his wife, Shirlee Thompson, of Fredericksburg; four children and spouses, John E. III and Beverly Thompson of Robstown, Piper and Kenneth Gerland of Robstown, William and Terrie Manning III of Willow City, and Jody and David Seagers of San Antonio; and four grandchildren, J.D. Schmidt, Christina Seagers, Madison Gerland and John Ernst Thompson IV.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Newton Thompson.
Honorary pallbearers for the service were Allan Burditt, Dickie Stone, Billy Harwell, Wayne Pasqual, Dr. Bob Harris and Floyde Burside.
A memorial service was held on Monday, March 17, at 2 p.m. in the St. Barnabas Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dick Elwood officiating.
Entombment of the cremains followed in the St. Barnabas Columbarium.
Memorial contributions may be made in Corkey Thompson's memory to the St. Barnabas Columbarium Fund, SPCA, Hill Country Memorial Hospital Hospice, or to the charity of one's choice.
