COLLEGE STATION — The Whitesboro mixed doubles team of Scott Gautier and Morgan Portman reached the semifinals in the Class 3A state tournament at Texas A&M on Thursday.
Scott Gautier and Portman, who filled in at state for an injured Ruth Leach, earned their third-place spot with Texoma’s only victory of the day before falling, 6-0, 6-0, against Rockdale’s Blake King and Erin Blanchard. Those two will face Big Lake Reagan County’s Turner Stark and Isabell Holland for the state title today.
Gautier and Portman opened the day with a 7-6 (1), 2-6, 6-4 quarterfinal victory against Ingram Moore’s Brenda Chimal and Oscar Melendez
Also in 3A mixed doubles, Van Alstyne’s Janae Larriviere and Noah Tormos lost their quarterfinal match, 6-1, 6-4 against Woodville’s Cameron Coker and Lyndsey Kinard.
In 3A girls singles, Whitesboro’s Makayla Williams lost her quarterfinal match, 7-5, 6-2, against Lago Vista’s Hannah Long.
Whitewright’s Juliann Kelley lost in the quarterfinals on the other side of the bracket, 6-1, 6-1, against Corpus Christi London’s Sara Humpal, who advanced to today’s state title match.
In 3A girls doubles, Leonard’s Maggie Scoggins and Alyssa Davis lost their quarterfinal match, 6-2, 6-3 against Crane’s Meagan King and Lindsey Richards and suffered their first loss of the season in 33 matches. King and Richards advanced to today’s state title match.
Bells’ Dustin and Meagan Hardin lost their quarterfinal match, 6-3, 7-5, against Forsan’s Lake Shafer and Sterling Freeman.
Blue Ridge’s Chaice Weatherford and Cameron Armstrong lost their quarterfinal match, 6-3, 6-3, against Centerville’s Jake Long and Preston Kornegy.
Ector’s Emma Harris and Taylor Merworth lost their quarterfinal match, 6-4, 6-4 against Sanderson’s Stephanie Lozano and Shyanne Mills.
