GEORGE WEST - Calallen's powerlifting season was underway Saturday as the boys and girls teams competed in the George West meet.
Both varsity squads finished in first, but the boys team was awarded second place after tying Karnes City with 39 points. Karnes City was awarded first place since they had more lifters with first-place finishes.
Receiving first-place awards for the boys were Paul Besse (132-pounds), Stephen Rios (148 pounds) and Ben Flores (242 pounds).
Given McClure and Kellen Hastings received second-place awards. McClure competed in the 114-pound class and Hastings competed at 123 pounds.
Marco Acuna finished third in the super heavyweight division.
For the girls, four finished in first place of their respected classes.
Winning for Calallen were Devin Walz (123 pounds), Amy Broomfield (148 pounds), Gaby Gaona (165 pounds) and Meghan Deaver (220+ pounds).
Brianna Bruner finished second in the 132-pound division.
Four lifters finished in third place - Natalie Harvey (114 pounds), Shelby Cunningham (132 pounds), Cassandra Sanchez (198 pounds) and Lynsey Lopez (220+ pounds).
Gaona and Rios were named Most Outstanding Lifters at the event.
The junior varsity team fared well, finishing in second place overall. Jaime Alejandro won the 114-pound class, while Nathan Trevino won at 242 pounds.
Next up for Calallen is the Mathis High School meet Friday and Saturday.
