FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Corpus Christi Hammerheads overcame a spirit Fairbanks Grizzlies squad Saturday night to improve to 8-1.
The 77-54 victory was the Hammerheads' fifth-straight victory. Corpus Christi will remain in Alaska through this week for a Thursday night game against the Alaska Wild.
Quarterback Dustin Almond was 12 of 23 for 226 yards and six touchdowns.
Still, the biggest touchdown pass of the game came in the first quarter and was thrown by receiver Nathaniel Dunn. Corpus Christi was clinging to a 14-6 lead and was pinned down at their own 4-yardline. That's when Almond tossed a quick flare to Dunn behind the line of scrimmage. Dunn then connected with a wide-open Matt Ross who was wide open at midfield. After the catch, it was an easy foot race for Ross to the end zone.
Defensive back Jason Lee provide some defensive points in the fourth quarter by picking up a Fairbanks fumble and returning it for a touchdown.
