The Hammerheads won their biggest game of the season so far Saturday night when they fought off the Abilene Ruff Riders in a 44-35 contest.
With the victory, the Hammerheads (6-6) are just half a game out of the IFL playoffs, and they improved to .500 for the first time this season. The Hammerheads trail the Ruff Riders (6-5) by just half a game for second place in the IFL's Lonestar Division. It was the team's fourth-straight victory.
Corpus Christi has two games left in the regular season - one Saturday on the road against Odessa and their season finale at home against San Angelo.
Saturday's game against Abilene was a battle from the start. The Hammerheads scored first on a 14-yard pass from Cory Miles to Austin Miles.
The teams then traded a series of touchdowns before halftime with the Hammerheads' scores coming on a three-yard run by Toric Goins, five-yard run by Miles and a five-yard pass to Fred Wallace from back-up quarterback Ty Sellers.
The Hammerheads then added to their 27-21 lead in the third quarter on a 24-yard field goal by Rene Vasquez and a five-yard rushing touchdown by Wallace.
Abilene made a small push in the fourth quarterback, but Corpus Christi's defense stepped up with a Johnny Anderson interception and a 24-yard return for a touchdown.
The interception was one of four in the game. Also recording interceptions were Stephen Fillmore, Jason Lee and James Griffin.
Miles finished the game completing 11 of 19 passes for 122 yards and one touchdown.
Goins led the team in receiving with four catches for 72 yards. Schuyler Anderson and Austin Willis each had three catches.
The Hammerheads will return home on July 4 to face the Stampede Express at Citgo Field.
