Following the game, parents began asking their daughters, "So, who's next?" Every daughter responded the same way.
"We don't know, and don't tell us."
The Tuloso-Midway Cherokees dismantled their first playoff opponent, Weslaco-East, 11-0 . But even after such a dominating performance, the girls felt a need to stick to the slogan that was on every T-shirt and banner - "One game at a time."
"We came out and just showed what were all about," said junior pitcher Kirsten Schwirtlich.
Schwirtlich was most impressive on the mound.
She ended the night striking out thirteen hitters, including the first seven at bat.
Only two hitters got on base, one on a single and the other on a throwing error.
"I was just excited," she said. "I just wanted to come out and execute."
The Cherokees' bats turned things on in the bottom of the second, scoring seven runs to break a scoreless tie. Destiny Rodriguez would drive in a run off a double.
Schwirtlich would follow her with a three-run homer to make the score 6-0.
Jessica Garcia would drive in the final run of the inning off a single.
The bats continued to keep things moving in the bottom of the third. Ashley Elizondo would bring in two more runs to extend the lead, 9-0.
Schwirtlich ended the game in the top of the fifth, striking out three of four hitters.
The game was called on the 10-run rule.
"We had to adjust to their pitching," Schwirtlich said. "But we did it. The defense was great and we executed."
The Cherokees will play the Victoria East Lady Titans in the second round. The Lady Titans defeated San Antonio Brackenridge, 7-3, on Saturday.
And now that the team knows who their opponent is, the Cherokees appear ready for whatever they might see in the next round.
"I'm ready for Round Two and ready to get to practice," Schwirtlich said, affirming the team's eager attitude to take things one game at a time.
The Cherokees will travel to Victoria for Game 1 of their match-up against the Lady Titans on Thursday. But they will be back home at Tuloso-Midway's softball field for Game 2.
Game 3, if necessary, will be played Saturday in Sinton.
