Over a full 20-season span (1991-2010), the Calallen Wildcat baseball team has shown it is the team to beat on the Region IV-4A diamond.
The number of titles it has won can testify to that challenge.
In the bi-district round, the Wildcats are 20-0 since 1991, including byes.
Another undefeated round, in the region quarterfinals, Calallen is 13-for-13, including five fine duels with the Pickers (1998-99, 2001, 2003, 2008) since the third place team started qualifying in the 1996-97 school year.
Calallen's only "early" playoff knockout was a 2007 area loss to Moody, which stopped a string of 16 straight area crowns, and impressive number of trips to the region quarters (1997-06, 10) and region semifinals (1991-2006, 16).
Gaining its 11th trip to state this week - five times each in the 1990s and 2000s - the Wildcats, a 19-time region semifinalist (1991-2006, 08-10), won its 11th state quarterfinal in 17 chances by coming back to beat Lake Travis last week in three games.
The six teams to defeat the Wildcats in the "Elite Eight" are: Robstown, 1991-92; Austin McCallum, 1997; Boerne, 2004; New Braunfels, 2006; Moody, 2009.
Calallen (1995-2000) and Robstown (1987-1992) share the Region IV-4A mark for consecutive trips to the region finals.
The Wildcats' two region semifinal losses were against Belton (1994) and Kerrville Tivy (2001).
At the state tourney, the Wildcats are 9-7, 6-4 in the semifinals and 3-3 in state title games, winning it all in their last two Dell Diamond visits.
Calallen takes a 37-4 record to the tourney this year, the 10th anniversary - since first winning state in 2000. Wildcat head coach Steve Chapman has won a dozen (1991, 96-2000, 2002-04, 2008-10) solo district championships in his 28 years, also sharing another four with the Pickers (1989, 1995, 2005, 2007).
In all, the Wildcats have won a total of 105 titles, from district to state championships.
Calallen has been to the playoffs a total of 22 times under Chapman, dropping a one-game to Mercedes (1986) and a three-game series to Uvalde (1989), in addition to their current 20-year streak.
Calallen played Frisco Wakeland on Wednesday in Round Rock, winning that game, 6-3, to advance to the state final on Thursday.
The results of that game were not available as of press time.
