Two teams with a combined 26 state tourney trips and nine state titles went at it last Thursday at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
Brenham, with its second one-run victory of the tournament, slipped by the Wildcats, 2-1, snapping a 1-1 tie in the last of the sixth on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded.
The Cubs' Chase Wellbrock (18-0), setting new Brenham season marks in pitching wins and the best undefeated record set by Mark Kuecker (17, 1975) and Jon Peters (15-0, 1987), respectively, had to get out of a one-out, two on jam in the top of the seventh.
Chad Vanaman and Tanner Vandevere stroked their second hits of the game - joining Brad Bell, and 2-for-3 - as Tate Bammert came up. Preston Dorsey, who scored on a Vandevere double in the top of the second, was at second and took off on a hit-and-run attempt, but was thrown out at third.
Bammert flew out to left to end the contest as the Cubs, the only team in Texas baseball history to three-peat (1986-88) as champions, won their first state title since 1988, their seventh in school history. Brenham also won state three times in the 1970s (1970, 1975, 1976).
Calallen out-hit Brenham, 7-6, with Wyatt Mathison taking the loss in a complete game effort, striking out three and allowing two walks before 4,002 fans in the one-hour, 50-minute contest. Mathisen had Calallen's second hit in the top of the first, a double after a caught-stealing. Mathison's final pitching record was 7-2.
Calallen finished the season 38-5, the Cubs close behind at 37-5.
Rob Zastryzny (16-1) fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning against Frisco Wakeland, but his mates used a three-run fourth to take the lead for good. Zastryzny (7H, BB, 3K) was able to string five shutout innings between the second and sixth in his third complete game in six days.
Four Wildcats had multi-hit games, led by Richard Montemayor's 3-for-4, 2-RBI effort. Bell, who scored three, was 2-for-3, as Vanaman (RBI). Zastryzny, Montemayor, and Hunter Whetsel all stroked Wildcat doubles. Whetsel and Mathisen made good use of a couple of outs, adding sacrifice flies to the 6-3 comeback win.
Calallen out-hit FW, 11-7, as both teams made a pair of errors.
